Block Paving in Ware, explained

Most block paving that goes wrong did not go wrong at the top. It spread at an unrestrained edge, or it sank where the sub-base was never compacted properly, and the blocks themselves were never the problem. So that is where the money goes on our quotes, and it is what we look at first when somebody asks us to put a failed drive right.

The choice in front of you is bigger than it looks. Block range, colour, size, texture, laying pattern, border, and whether you want a permeable block so the drive drains through itself. We bring the ranges to the survey and lay a few options out on the ground, because a block looks different in a brochure to how it looks next to your brick in daylight.

We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you settle up when the drive is finished, swept and signed off.

We cover the SG12 postcode in Ware, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey with block ranges and patterns to look at on the ground
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing payable until the job is done
  • Excavation to the depth the ground and the traffic actually call for
  • A compacted sub-base, a screeded laying course, and edge restraints haunched in concrete
  • Blocks laid to your pattern, cut in around manholes, kerbs and the threshold
  • Kiln-dried sand brushed in, the drive vibrated, a second sanding pass, and the site swept clean

Choosing block paving in Ware

Block colour is harder to judge than people expect. Ranges that look clearly different in a brochure can read almost identically once they are down and wet, and a blend that looks smart on a screen can fight with the brick on your own house. We bring samples to the survey in Ware and lay them out on the drive so you are choosing in daylight against the real thing.

Texture is part of it too. A tumbled or aged block reads softer and suits an older property; a crisp-edged block looks tidier against newer brick. Neither is better, but they sit very differently next to a house.

Underneath the aesthetics, the structural points are the same everywhere. Herringbone where the car stands because it interlocks under turning and braking, restrained edges haunched in concrete so nothing spreads, and joint sand kept topped up so the blocks stay locked and weeds stay out.

What happens on site in Ware

The drive is excavated to the depth the build-up requires and the spoil removed, then the sub-base is laid and compacted in layers rather than tipped in and rolled across the surface.

Edge restraints go in next, haunched in concrete, before any blocks are laid. They are what stops the paving spreading outwards under use. A screeded laying course follows and the blocks are laid to the agreed pattern off the fixed edge, with cuts around manholes, kerbs and the threshold made with a splitter or a saw.

Once all the blocks are down, kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and the drive is compacted with a plate. The vibration locks the blocks into a single surface. A second round of sand is brushed in afterwards, because the joints always take more once compacted.

What affects the price in Ware

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The block range you pick, which is the single biggest swing in most quotes
  • The laying pattern, because herringbone and the detailed patterns carry far more cutting
  • How much restraint the perimeter needs, and whether any of it is kerbed
  • The depth of sub-base the ground and the expected traffic call for
  • Cutting in around curves, manholes, gullies and the garage threshold
  • Clearing the old surface, and any drainage channel across the entrance

Looking after block paving

Joint sand every couple of years is the job. Full joints are what keep the blocks locked and the weeds out, and it takes about half an hour.

Pressure washing is best done on a wide fan from a sensible distance, followed by re-sanding. A concentrated jet at close range strips the joints. Weeds are easy to pull while they are small.

Sealing will deepen the colour and make spills easier to clean, which some people like, but it repeats every few years and is not required. On a sound base the paving lasts decades, and any damaged block can be swapped for a spare.

Block Paving in Ware: Common Questions

Do you work in Ware?

Yes, SG12 is in our normal area. We are based in Hatfield and the survey and written quotation are both free.

Can I see the blocks before I decide?

Yes. We bring samples to the survey and lay them on the drive, because colour and texture read quite differently against real brick in daylight than in a brochure.

Is the survey free?

Yes, and the quote. No deposit is taken and nothing is payable until the drive is finished.

Which block suits an older house?

Usually a tumbled or aged block, which reads softer. Crisp-edged blocks tend to sit better against newer brick. It is worth seeing both against your own wall.

How long will the drive be out of use?

The groundwork takes most of the time. Once the blocks are laid, compacted and sanded you can use it. The quotation gives the days.

What maintenance is there?

Topping up the kiln-dried sand in the joints every couple of years, and the occasional weed. That is about it.
