Resin Driveways in Ware, explained

Two quite different surfaces get sold as resin, and the word on the quotation is often the only place the difference shows. Resin bonded is stone scattered over a tacky layer. Resin bound, which is what we lay, has the stone mixed right through the material and troweled flat, and only one of the two gives you a sealed surface that drains through itself.

Worth asking whoever else is pricing your drive. The cost, though, is decided underneath. Resin is a surface layer, so what matters is the state of the base below it and how much of that has to be rebuilt.

The survey opens it up and the quotation that follows is one fixed figure on paper. Ware, SG12, is part of our usual round from Hatfield. The stone blend is chosen against your own brick, no deposit is taken, and you settle once the drive is finished.

We cover the SG12 postcode in Ware, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free site survey, with stone samples to hold up against the house
  • One fixed price in writing, with no deposit and nothing to pay up front
  • Lifting the old surface and carting the spoil away
  • A permeable sub-base compacted in layers, and a binder course where the base needs one
  • Resin and stone mixed on site and hand troweled, with edges, thresholds and drainage detailed in
  • A full sweep up, and payment only once you have walked the finished drive with us

Choosing resin driveways in Ware

Permeable is the word that sells resin, and it is accurate, but it describes the whole build rather than just the top of it. A resin bound surface does let water through. Whether that water then goes anywhere depends entirely on the sub-base beneath it.

Get both right and rain soaks away into the ground where it falls, instead of sheeting down the drive and out across the pavement. Get the surface right and the base wrong and you have moved the puddle rather than removed it, which is why the survey in Ware starts with a trial hole rather than a tape measure.

Above that, the surface does the ordinary things well. The stone is carried through the resin and trowelled flat, so there is no loose gravel to migrate and no joints for weeds. You choose the blend from samples laid out on your own drive, next to your own brickwork.

What happens on site in Ware

The base is where the days go. We excavate the existing drive to the depth the new build-up requires, take the spoil away, and lay a permeable sub-base compacted in layers. Layering is what keeps it level, and on a permeable build it is also what lets the water through.

Where the excavation calls for it, a binder course goes down to give the resin a firm and even bed. The resin and stone are mixed on site in a forced-action mixer in individual batches, then spread and trowelled by hand before the mix sets.

We lay to conditions. Resin needs a dry surface and workable temperatures to cure, so rain or a hard frost stops us and we will tell you rather than carry on regardless. Foot traffic the same day is normal, vehicles roughly a day later.

What affects the price in Ware

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • How much of the existing surface has to come out, and where the spoil goes
  • What we find underneath it: a sound base saves you a great deal, a failed one has to be rebuilt
  • The area, and how much of it is curves and cuts rather than straight runs
  • The stone blend you choose, because the aggregates are not all priced the same
  • Drainage, edgings, thresholds and any steps that form part of the job
  • Access, and in particular whether we can get a lorry and a mixer near the work

Looking after resin driveways

Not much is asked of you. Keep leaves off through autumn using a brush or a blower, because leaf litter left to rot is what moss grows in and it will slow the drainage as well.

A hose handles the rest. With a pressure washer, use a wide fan setting, stand well back and keep it moving; a narrow jet held close is what damages resin. Keep de-icing salt light too, occasional scattering rather than heavy yearly use.

Where the base was built properly, 15 to 20 years is a reasonable expectation. Damage stays put, so a section can be cut out and re-laid as a patch without the whole drive being lifted.

Resin Driveways in Ware: Common Questions

Do you cover Ware?

Yes, SG12 is within our working area. We are based in Hatfield, and the survey and written quotation are free.

Is the survey chargeable?

No, neither the survey nor the quote. There is nothing to sign, no deposit, and nothing to pay until the drive is finished.

What makes a drive permeable?

Both layers. The resin bound surface lets water through, and the sub-base underneath has to be built to accept and release it. One without the other does not drain.

How soon could you start?

It depends on bookings and the weather, since resin will not lay in rain or frost. We give you a window we can realistically meet.

Is planning permission needed?

Usually not, because permeable front-garden surfacing generally falls within permitted development. Listed buildings and conservation areas are worth checking with the council.

How long will the drive be out of use?

The groundwork takes the days rather than the resin. The quotation tells you how many to allow.

What if it rains during the work?

Groundwork continues in most weather. The resin waits until it can cure, and we return to finish it properly rather than lay it to a date.

How is the cost worked out?

From the base: what is under the drive and how much of it has to be rebuilt. Established at the free survey, then quoted as one fixed written figure.

How long does it last?

Fifteen to twenty years over a sound base, which is what governs most of the lifespan.

Is it slippery?

Not as a rule. The surface is aggregate and water drains through rather than standing on it. Ice and wet leaves need the usual care.
