Block Paving in Potters Bar, explained

Most block paving that goes wrong did not go wrong at the top. It spread at an unrestrained edge, or it sank where the sub-base was never compacted properly, and the blocks themselves were never the problem. So that is where the money goes on our quotes, and it is what we look at first when somebody asks us to put a failed drive right.

The choice in front of you is bigger than it looks. Block range, colour, size, texture, laying pattern, border, and whether you want a permeable block so the drive drains through itself. We bring the ranges to the survey and lay a few options out on the ground, because a block looks different in a brochure to how it looks next to your brick in daylight.

We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you settle up when the drive is finished, swept and signed off.

We cover the EN6 postcode in Potters Bar, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey with block ranges and patterns to look at on the ground
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing payable until the job is done
  • Excavation to the depth the ground and the traffic actually call for
  • A compacted sub-base, a screeded laying course, and edge restraints haunched in concrete
  • Blocks laid to your pattern, cut in around manholes, kerbs and the threshold
  • Kiln-dried sand brushed in, the drive vibrated, a second sanding pass, and the site swept clean

Choosing block paving in Potters Bar

When you are comparing block paving quotes, the useful exercise is to work out what each one actually includes. Excavation depth, spoil removal, the sub-base make-up, edge restraints and their haunching, the laying course, the cutting, the sand and the compaction: all of it is the job, and all of it can quietly go missing from a cheap price.

Ours is written as a single fixed figure covering the lot, arrived at after seeing the drive rather than over the phone. If the base needs more than usual, that shows in the quotation before you commit, not halfway through the week.

As a surface, blocks hold up well in Potters Bar and everywhere else for the same reasons: herringbone interlocks under vehicle loads, repairs are made by lifting and relaying rather than breaking out, and the only recurring task is keeping the joint sand topped up.

What happens on site in Potters Bar

The excavation is taken to the depth the build-up needs and the spoil is removed from site. The sub-base then goes in and is compacted in layers, each compacted before the next, which is what keeps the finished level true.

Edge restraints are set and haunched in concrete before any blocks are laid, since paving that is not held at its perimeter will creep and loosen. A screeded laying course follows and the blocks go down to the agreed pattern from the fixed edge, with cuts around manholes, kerbs and the threshold made by splitter or saw.

To finish, kiln-dried sand is brushed into every joint and a plate compactor is run across the drive, vibrating the blocks into the laying course so they lock together. The joints are sanded a second time, because the first pass always drops.

What affects the price in Potters Bar

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The block range you pick, which is the single biggest swing in most quotes
  • The laying pattern, because herringbone and the detailed patterns carry far more cutting
  • How much restraint the perimeter needs, and whether any of it is kerbed
  • The depth of sub-base the ground and the expected traffic call for
  • Cutting in around curves, manholes, gullies and the garage threshold
  • Clearing the old surface, and any drainage channel across the entrance

Looking after block paving

Keep the joints filled. Kiln-dried sand brushed in every couple of years is the whole maintenance programme and it is what stops blocks moving and weeds rooting.

A pressure washer is fine used sensibly, on a wide fan from a distance, and re-sanded afterwards. Used close on a narrow jet it empties the joints. Weeds that are dealt with early lift out easily.

Sealing is a choice rather than a necessity, deepening colour and helping with spills, but needing renewal every few years. The base and the edges are what give you decades, and individual damaged blocks can be swapped at any time.

Block Paving in Potters Bar: Common Questions

Do you cover Potters Bar?

Yes, EN6 is in our area. We are based in Hatfield, and both the survey and the written quotation are free.

What is included in the price?

Everything in the written quotation: excavation, spoil removal, the sub-base, edge restraints and haunching, the laying course, the blocks, the cutting, sanding, compaction and the clear-up. One fixed figure.

Will you quote over the phone?

No, because the price depends on what is under the existing drive and on the levels. We look first, then put a fixed figure in writing.

Is there a deposit?

No deposit, and nothing to pay until the drive is finished and you are happy with it.

How long does the job take?

The groundwork takes the bulk of the time; the drive is usable once blocks are laid, compacted and sanded. The quotation says how many days to allow.

Can I choose the blocks?

Yes, samples come to the survey so you can see them against your own brick in daylight.
