Block Paving in Welwyn Garden City, explained

Most block paving that goes wrong did not go wrong at the top. It spread at an unrestrained edge, or it sank where the sub-base was never compacted properly, and the blocks themselves were never the problem. So that is where the money goes on our quotes, and it is what we look at first when somebody asks us to put a failed drive right.

The choice in front of you is bigger than it looks. Block range, colour, size, texture, laying pattern, border, and whether you want a permeable block so the drive drains through itself. We bring the ranges to the survey and lay a few options out on the ground, because a block looks different in a brochure to how it looks next to your brick in daylight.

We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you settle up when the drive is finished, swept and signed off.

We cover the AL7 and AL8 postcodes in Welwyn Garden City, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey with block ranges and patterns to look at on the ground
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing payable until the job is done
  • Excavation to the depth the ground and the traffic actually call for
  • A compacted sub-base, a screeded laying course, and edge restraints haunched in concrete
  • Blocks laid to your pattern, cut in around manholes, kerbs and the threshold
  • Kiln-dried sand brushed in, the drive vibrated, a second sanding pass, and the site swept clean

Choosing block paving in Welwyn Garden City

The quiet advantage of block paving is that it is reversible. Every other driveway surface has to be broken out when something goes wrong underneath it. Blocks come up, the problem gets fixed, and the same blocks go back down, which matters more than people expect over twenty years of utility digs, spills and the odd settled corner.

The pattern is a structural decision as much as a visual one. Herringbone is used where vehicles stand and turn because the interlock resists the loads a car puts through a surface when it brakes or swings the wheel. Stretcher and basketweave are better suited to paths and edgings that only carry people.

The honest drawback is the jointing. Those joints need their kiln-dried sand kept topped up, or weeds find the gaps and blocks begin to move. It is half an hour of work every couple of years rather than a real chore, but it is work, and it is worth knowing before you choose between surfaces in Welwyn Garden City.

What happens on site in Welwyn Garden City

Everything starts below ground. The drive is excavated to the depth the build-up calls for, the spoil is taken away, and the sub-base goes in compacted in layers. Then the edge restraints are set and haunched in concrete, which happens before laying rather than after, because they are what holds the finished surface together.

A screeded laying course goes over the compacted base, and the blocks are laid to the chosen pattern working from that fixed edge inwards. Cutting around manholes, kerbs and the threshold is done with a splitter or a saw to keep the lines true and the joints tight.

With the blocks down, kiln-dried sand is brushed into every joint and the whole area is run over with a plate compactor. The vibration beds the blocks and locks them against each other. We brush a second round of sand in afterwards, since the level always drops once it has been compacted.

What affects the price in Welwyn Garden City

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The block range you pick, which is the single biggest swing in most quotes
  • The laying pattern, because herringbone and the detailed patterns carry far more cutting
  • How much restraint the perimeter needs, and whether any of it is kerbed
  • The depth of sub-base the ground and the expected traffic call for
  • Cutting in around curves, manholes, gullies and the garage threshold
  • Clearing the old surface, and any drainage channel across the entrance

Looking after block paving

Keep the joints full. Sweeping kiln-dried sand into them every couple of years is the single most useful thing you can do for a block drive, because joints that have emptied are where movement and weeds both begin.

Use a pressure washer thoughtfully. On a tight jet at close range it will pull the sand straight back out of the joints, so work on a wide fan, keep back, and re-sand once it has dried. Weeds lift out without much effort if you catch them early.

You do not have to seal it. Sealing darkens the colour and makes spills easier to deal with, but it is a job that repeats every few years. Over a sound base the paving lasts decades, and any block that does get damaged can simply be swapped for a spare.

Block Paving in Welwyn Garden City: Common Questions

Do you cover Welwyn Garden City?

Yes, AL7 and AL8 are both inside our working area, and the yard in Hatfield is only a short run away. The survey and written quote are free.

Do you charge to quote?

No. Both the survey and the quotation are free, there is no deposit, and nothing is payable until the work is complete.

If something is dug up later, is the drive ruined?

No, and that is one of the reasons people choose blocks. The affected blocks are lifted, the work underneath is done, and the same blocks are relaid.

How long does the job take?

The groundwork takes the bulk of it. Laying is comparatively quick, and once the paving is compacted and sanded the drive can be used. The quotation gives you the number of days.

Can I choose the blocks myself?

Yes, we bring samples to the survey so you can judge colour and texture against the house rather than from a photograph.

How much upkeep is there?

Topping up the joint sand every couple of years, and pulling the occasional weed. That is really the whole list.
