Block Paving in North Watford, explained

Most block paving that goes wrong did not go wrong at the top. It spread at an unrestrained edge, or it sank where the sub-base was never compacted properly, and the blocks themselves were never the problem. So that is where the money goes on our quotes, and it is what we look at first when somebody asks us to put a failed drive right.

The choice in front of you is bigger than it looks. Block range, colour, size, texture, laying pattern, border, and whether you want a permeable block so the drive drains through itself. We bring the ranges to the survey and lay a few options out on the ground, because a block looks different in a brochure to how it looks next to your brick in daylight.

We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you settle up when the drive is finished, swept and signed off.

We cover the WD24 postcode in North Watford, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey with block ranges and patterns to look at on the ground
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing payable until the job is done
  • Excavation to the depth the ground and the traffic actually call for
  • A compacted sub-base, a screeded laying course, and edge restraints haunched in concrete
  • Blocks laid to your pattern, cut in around manholes, kerbs and the threshold
  • Kiln-dried sand brushed in, the drive vibrated, a second sanding pass, and the site swept clean

Choosing block paving in North Watford

A block drive is only as good as the direction it sends water. Levels that fall gently away from the house, a channel across the entrance where the ground needs one, and permeable blocks with grit-filled joints where it makes sense, are what stop water pooling against the garage or running out across the pavement.

None of that is decided by the blocks you pick. It is set during the groundwork, by the falls we build into the base and the make-up we put underneath, which is why the survey in North Watford starts with the levels and the ground rather than the colour chart.

The blocks themselves bring their own advantages. They lift and relay, so repairs are local and use the original blocks, and herringbone interlocks under the turning and braking loads where a vehicle stands. The one recurring job is keeping the joint sand topped up.

What happens on site in North Watford

We excavate to the depth the build-up requires, clear the spoil, and compact the sub-base in layers, setting the falls as we go so the finished surface drains where it should rather than where it happens to.

Edge restraints are installed and haunched in concrete before laying, including across the entrance threshold where the loads are heaviest. Then a screeded laying course goes down and the blocks are laid to the agreed pattern off the fixed edge, with cuts around manholes, kerbs and thresholds made using a splitter or a saw.

Finally kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and the drive is run over with a plate compactor, bedding the blocks and locking them together. A second pass of sand follows, since the joints always take more once everything has been vibrated down.

What affects the price in North Watford

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The block range you pick, which is the single biggest swing in most quotes
  • The laying pattern, because herringbone and the detailed patterns carry far more cutting
  • How much restraint the perimeter needs, and whether any of it is kerbed
  • The depth of sub-base the ground and the expected traffic call for
  • Cutting in around curves, manholes, gullies and the garage threshold
  • Clearing the old surface, and any drainage channel across the entrance

Looking after block paving

Joint sand every couple of years is the routine. Full joints keep the blocks tight and leave weeds nowhere to establish, and it is a half-hour job.

Use a pressure washer sensibly: wide fan, good distance, and re-sand afterwards. A narrow jet held close will empty the joints and undo exactly what the compaction achieved. Weeds pull out easily when they are young.

Sealing is optional. It deepens the colour and makes spills easier to lift but has to be repeated every few years. On a sound base the drive lasts decades, and a damaged block can be exchanged for a spare at any point.

Block Paving in North Watford: Common Questions

Do you cover North Watford?

Yes, WD24 is one of our areas. We are based in Hatfield and the survey and written quotation are free.

Will it stop water collecting at the garage?

That is what the falls are for. We set the levels during the groundwork so water is carried away from the house, and fit a channel at the entrance where it is needed.

Is the survey chargeable?

No, nor the quote. There is no deposit and nothing to pay until the drive is finished.

How long does it take?

The excavation and base take most of the days. The drive can be used once the blocks are laid, compacted and sanded. The quotation gives the number.

Can I see the blocks first?

Yes, samples are brought to the survey so you can see them against your own brickwork.

Do permeable blocks help?

They can, where the ground below will take the water. They use wider joints filled with grit so rain drains through rather than running off. We will say at the survey whether your ground suits them.
