Block Paving in Hoddesdon, explained

Most block paving that goes wrong did not go wrong at the top. It spread at an unrestrained edge, or it sank where the sub-base was never compacted properly, and the blocks themselves were never the problem. So that is where the money goes on our quotes, and it is what we look at first when somebody asks us to put a failed drive right.

The choice in front of you is bigger than it looks. Block range, colour, size, texture, laying pattern, border, and whether you want a permeable block so the drive drains through itself. We bring the ranges to the survey and lay a few options out on the ground, because a block looks different in a brochure to how it looks next to your brick in daylight.

We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you settle up when the drive is finished, swept and signed off.

We cover the EN11 postcode in Hoddesdon, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey with block ranges and patterns to look at on the ground
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing payable until the job is done
  • Excavation to the depth the ground and the traffic actually call for
  • A compacted sub-base, a screeded laying course, and edge restraints haunched in concrete
  • Blocks laid to your pattern, cut in around manholes, kerbs and the threshold
  • Kiln-dried sand brushed in, the drive vibrated, a second sanding pass, and the site swept clean

Choosing block paving in Hoddesdon

The entrance is where a lot of block drives are let down. It takes the heaviest loads as vehicles turn in off the road, it is where water tends to collect, and it is the point at which the drive has to meet the pavement at a sensible level. Get the detailing right there and the rest of the drive follows.

That means restrained, concrete-haunched edges across the threshold, falls set so water is carried away rather than towards the garage, and a drainage channel where the levels call for one. If a new or widened vehicle crossing is needed, that is a council matter and we will say so at the survey in Hoddesdon rather than leave you to find out.

Beyond the entrance, blocks do what they do well. Herringbone interlocks under turning and braking where the car stands, repairs are made by lifting and relaying the original blocks, and the ongoing job is keeping kiln-dried sand topped up in the joints.

What happens on site in Hoddesdon

First the excavation, taken down to the depth the build-up needs, with the spoil carted away and the sub-base compacted in layers. The entrance usually gets particular attention here, since it carries the most load and sets the levels for everything behind it.

Edge restraints are set and haunched in concrete before laying, all the way round including across the threshold. Then a screeded laying course, and the blocks laid to the agreed pattern off the fixed edge, with cuts around manholes, kerbs and the garage threshold made with a splitter or a saw so the lines stay clean.

The joints are filled with kiln-dried sand and the drive is compacted with a plate, which beds the blocks and locks them together. A second round of sand goes in after that, because the joints always take more once the paving has settled.

What affects the price in Hoddesdon

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The block range you pick, which is the single biggest swing in most quotes
  • The laying pattern, because herringbone and the detailed patterns carry far more cutting
  • How much restraint the perimeter needs, and whether any of it is kerbed
  • The depth of sub-base the ground and the expected traffic call for
  • Cutting in around curves, manholes, gullies and the garage threshold
  • Clearing the old surface, and any drainage channel across the entrance

Looking after block paving

Joint sand is the maintenance. Top it up every couple of years and the blocks stay locked and the weeds stay out. It is a short job with a disproportionate effect on how long the drive lasts.

Go gently with a pressure washer. Close range on a narrow jet empties the joints, so keep to a wide fan at a distance and brush fresh sand in when it has dried. Weeds lift out easily if you deal with them early on.

Sealing is a choice. It brings the colour up and makes spills easier to handle, but repeats every few years. On a sound base you should get decades out of it, and any damaged block can be swapped for a spare.

Block Paving in Hoddesdon: Common Questions

Do you cover Hoddesdon?

Yes, EN11 is one of our standard areas. We work out of Hatfield and the survey and written quotation are free.

Do I need a dropped kerb?

Only if you are making a new vehicle crossing or widening one. It is a council application, not something we can authorise, but we will tell you at the survey whether it looks like you need one.

What about drainage at the entrance?

We set the falls so water is taken away from the house, and fit a channel across the entrance where the levels require it. Which applies depends on your ground and we will explain which we are proposing.

Is the survey free?

Yes, and so is the quote. There is no deposit and nothing to pay until the drive is complete.

How long will it take?

The groundwork takes most of the time, with laying and finishing quicker. The drive is usable once compacted and sanded. The quotation gives the days to allow.

Can I choose the blocks?

Yes, samples are brought to the survey so you can see colour and texture against your own brick.
