Block Paving in Cheshunt, explained

Most block paving that goes wrong did not go wrong at the top. It spread at an unrestrained edge, or it sank where the sub-base was never compacted properly, and the blocks themselves were never the problem. So that is where the money goes on our quotes, and it is what we look at first when somebody asks us to put a failed drive right.

The choice in front of you is bigger than it looks. Block range, colour, size, texture, laying pattern, border, and whether you want a permeable block so the drive drains through itself. We bring the ranges to the survey and lay a few options out on the ground, because a block looks different in a brochure to how it looks next to your brick in daylight.

We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you settle up when the drive is finished, swept and signed off.

We cover the EN8 postcode in Cheshunt, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey with block ranges and patterns to look at on the ground
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing payable until the job is done
  • Excavation to the depth the ground and the traffic actually call for
  • A compacted sub-base, a screeded laying course, and edge restraints haunched in concrete
  • Blocks laid to your pattern, cut in around manholes, kerbs and the threshold
  • Kiln-dried sand brushed in, the drive vibrated, a second sanding pass, and the site swept clean

Choosing block paving in Cheshunt

If drainage is the problem you are trying to solve, ask about permeable blocks. They are laid with wider joints filled with clean grit rather than sand, so rainwater drains down between the blocks and into the base instead of running across the surface towards the house or out onto the road.

That only works if the sub-base below is built to accept the water, so it is a decision about the whole build rather than just the blocks. Where the ground will not take it, the answer is usually standard blocks with falls set properly and a drainage channel at the entrance, which we would talk through at the survey in Cheshunt.

Whichever you go for, blocks keep their best feature: they lift and relay. A settled patch, a utility trench or a stained area is repaired by taking those blocks up, dealing with what is underneath and putting the same blocks back. The trade-off is the joints, which need their sand or grit kept topped up.

What happens on site in Cheshunt

The groundwork decides the drainage as much as the blocks do. We excavate to the depth required, cart the spoil away and compact the sub-base in layers, choosing the make-up according to whether the drive is being built to drain through or to fall to a channel.

Edge restraints go in next and are haunched in concrete before any laying starts, because an unrestrained edge is what lets a block drive spread and loosen. Then a screeded laying course, and the blocks go down to the agreed pattern off that fixed edge, with cuts made by splitter or saw around manholes, kerbs and the threshold.

Finally the joints are filled, kiln-dried sand for standard blocks or clean grit for permeable ones, and the area is compacted with a plate. That vibration locks everything together. A second fill follows the compaction, because the first always drops once the blocks have settled.

What affects the price in Cheshunt

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The block range you pick, which is the single biggest swing in most quotes
  • The laying pattern, because herringbone and the detailed patterns carry far more cutting
  • How much restraint the perimeter needs, and whether any of it is kerbed
  • The depth of sub-base the ground and the expected traffic call for
  • Cutting in around curves, manholes, gullies and the garage threshold
  • Clearing the old surface, and any drainage channel across the entrance

Looking after block paving

The joints are what you maintain. Top them up every couple of years with the right material, sand for standard paving and grit for permeable, and the drive will outlast almost anything else you could have put down.

Keep pressure washing gentle. A narrow jet held close will empty the joints in seconds, so use a wide fan, stand back and refill the joints afterwards. On permeable paving this matters twice over, because grit that has been blasted out is drainage you no longer have.

Sealing is a choice rather than a requirement, and it is not usually recommended on permeable paving since the point is to let water through. On a sound base expect decades of service, with damaged blocks swapped individually for spares.

Block Paving in Cheshunt: Common Questions

Do you work in Cheshunt?

Yes, EN8 is one of our standard areas. We are based in Hatfield and both the survey and the written quotation are free.

Is the survey free?

It is, as is the quote that follows it. No deposit is taken and nothing is due until the drive is finished.

What are permeable blocks?

Blocks laid with wider joints filled with clean grit, so water drains down through the surface rather than running off it. They need a sub-base built to take that water, which we assess at the survey.

What do you do about drainage at the entrance?

Either the drive is built to drain through, or the falls are set to carry water to a channel across the entrance. Which one suits depends on the ground and the levels, and we will tell you which we are proposing.

How long will the drive be out of use?

The excavation and base take most of the time. Once the blocks are laid, compacted and sanded you can use it. The quotation states the days to allow.

Can I see samples?

Yes, we bring them to the survey so you can see the colours against your own brick in daylight.
