Block Paving in Stevenage, explained

Most block paving that goes wrong did not go wrong at the top. It spread at an unrestrained edge, or it sank where the sub-base was never compacted properly, and the blocks themselves were never the problem. So that is where the money goes on our quotes, and it is what we look at first when somebody asks us to put a failed drive right.

The choice in front of you is bigger than it looks. Block range, colour, size, texture, laying pattern, border, and whether you want a permeable block so the drive drains through itself. We bring the ranges to the survey and lay a few options out on the ground, because a block looks different in a brochure to how it looks next to your brick in daylight.

We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you settle up when the drive is finished, swept and signed off.

We cover the SG1 and SG2 postcodes in Stevenage, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey with block ranges and patterns to look at on the ground
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing payable until the job is done
  • Excavation to the depth the ground and the traffic actually call for
  • A compacted sub-base, a screeded laying course, and edge restraints haunched in concrete
  • Blocks laid to your pattern, cut in around manholes, kerbs and the threshold
  • Kiln-dried sand brushed in, the drive vibrated, a second sanding pass, and the site swept clean

Choosing block paving in Stevenage

Nearly every block drive that has gone wrong has gone wrong at the edges first. Without a restrained, concrete-haunched edge the outer blocks creep outwards under traffic, the joints open up behind them, and the whole field of paving starts to loosen from the perimeter inwards. It is the single most common fault we are called out to look at.

Done properly it is a long-lived surface, and an unusually forgiving one, because it can be taken up and put back. A utility dig, a settled patch or an oil stain is dealt with by lifting those blocks, sorting what is underneath and relaying the same blocks. Nothing else on a driveway gives you that.

The pattern earns its keep too. Herringbone goes where the car sits, because the blocks interlock against the twisting and braking loads a vehicle puts through them. Stretcher or basketweave is fine on a path or a border that only ever takes feet. We will walk your layout in Stevenage and talk through which belongs where.

What happens on site in Stevenage

The excavation sets the depth for everything above it. We dig out to what the build-up needs, clear the spoil and compact the sub-base in layers rather than one drop, then set the edge restraints and haunch them into concrete before a single block is laid.

On top of the compacted base goes a screeded laying course, and the blocks are laid to the agreed pattern working off that fixed edge. Cuts around manholes, kerbs and the garage threshold are made with a splitter or a saw so the lines stay straight and the gaps stay tight.

Once everything is down we brush kiln-dried sand into the joints and run a plate compactor across the lot. That vibration is what locks the blocks against one another and turns a few thousand separate pieces into one surface. A second brushing of sand follows, because the first pass always settles.

What affects the price in Stevenage

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The block range you pick, which is the single biggest swing in most quotes
  • The laying pattern, because herringbone and the detailed patterns carry far more cutting
  • How much restraint the perimeter needs, and whether any of it is kerbed
  • The depth of sub-base the ground and the expected traffic call for
  • Cutting in around curves, manholes, gullies and the garage threshold
  • Clearing the old surface, and any drainage channel across the entrance

Looking after block paving

The joints are the maintenance. Brushing kiln-dried sand into them every couple of years takes about half an hour and does more for the life of the drive than anything else you could do to it. Empty joints let blocks shift and give weeds somewhere to root.

Be careful with a pressure washer. Held close on a narrow jet it strips the joint sand straight out, so use a wide angle, keep your distance, and re-sand afterwards. Weeds come away easily if you deal with them before they establish.

Sealing is optional rather than necessary. It deepens the colour and makes spills easier to lift, but it needs redoing every few years. On a properly built base the drive will last decades, and individual damaged blocks can be swapped out for spares whenever you like.

Block Paving in Stevenage: Common Questions

Do you lay block paving in Stevenage?

Yes, SG1 and SG2 are both in our normal area. We work from Hatfield and the survey and written quotation are free.

Is there a charge for the survey?

No, and none for the quotation either. There is no deposit and nothing to pay until the drive is finished.

How long will the drive be unusable?

Most of the time goes on the excavation and the base. Once the blocks start going down it moves quickly, and the drive is usable as soon as it has been compacted and sanded. We confirm the days when we quote.

Can I see the blocks first?

Yes. We bring samples to the survey so you can see colour and texture against your own brickwork in daylight, which is not something a brochure photograph will tell you.

Why do the edges matter so much?

Because unrestrained edges are what loosen a block drive. We set edge restraints and haunch them in concrete before laying, so the paving is held in on all sides and cannot spread.

Will I need a dropped kerb?

Only if you are creating a new vehicle crossing or widening an existing one. That is a council application rather than something we can grant, and we will tell you at the survey whether you are likely to need one.
