Block Paving in Hatfield, explained

Most block paving that goes wrong did not go wrong at the top. It spread at an unrestrained edge, or it sank where the sub-base was never compacted properly, and the blocks themselves were never the problem. So that is where the money goes on our quotes, and it is what we look at first when somebody asks us to put a failed drive right.

The choice in front of you is bigger than it looks. Block range, colour, size, texture, laying pattern, border, and whether you want a permeable block so the drive drains through itself. We bring the ranges to the survey and lay a few options out on the ground, because a block looks different in a brochure to how it looks next to your brick in daylight.

We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you settle up when the drive is finished, swept and signed off.

We cover the AL10 postcode in Hatfield, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey with block ranges and patterns to look at on the ground
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing payable until the job is done
  • Excavation to the depth the ground and the traffic actually call for
  • A compacted sub-base, a screeded laying course, and edge restraints haunched in concrete
  • Blocks laid to your pattern, cut in around manholes, kerbs and the threshold
  • Kiln-dried sand brushed in, the drive vibrated, a second sanding pass, and the site swept clean

Choosing block paving in Hatfield

Choosing blocks is the part that benefits most from seeing them properly, and Hatfield is where our yard is, on Stockbreach Road. Colour and texture behave differently against real brick in daylight than they do in a brochure, so we bring samples to the survey, and you are welcome to come and look at the ranges here instead if that is easier.

The pattern matters as much as the block. Herringbone goes where a car sits and turns, because the interlock takes the braking and steering loads without the blocks working loose. Stretcher and basketweave read more quietly and suit paths, borders and areas that only carry foot traffic.

The practical case for blocks is that they can be lifted and relaid. Settlement, a utility dig or a stain is a local repair using the same blocks, which is not true of a poured or laid surface. The counterweight is the jointing, which needs its sand kept topped up so weeds do not take hold.

What happens on site in Hatfield

Groundwork first, and it takes the longest. The existing drive is excavated to the depth the build-up needs, the spoil goes away, and the sub-base is compacted in layers rather than tipped in and rolled on top.

Edge restraints are set and haunched in concrete before any blocks are laid. That order matters, because an edge that is not restrained lets the paving creep outwards and open up, which is the usual reason a block drive goes loose. Then the screeded laying course, and the blocks go down to the agreed pattern from the fixed edge, cut around manholes and thresholds with a splitter or saw.

To finish, kiln-dried sand is brushed into every joint and a plate compactor is run over the whole area. The vibration locks the blocks together into a single surface. A second pass of sand goes in afterwards, because the first always drops as the blocks bed down.

What affects the price in Hatfield

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The block range you pick, which is the single biggest swing in most quotes
  • The laying pattern, because herringbone and the detailed patterns carry far more cutting
  • How much restraint the perimeter needs, and whether any of it is kerbed
  • The depth of sub-base the ground and the expected traffic call for
  • Cutting in around curves, manholes, gullies and the garage threshold
  • Clearing the old surface, and any drainage channel across the entrance

Looking after block paving

Joint sand is the whole maintenance routine. Brush more in every couple of years. It takes half an hour and it is what keeps the blocks tight and the weeds out.

Pressure washing is fine with some restraint. A wide fan from a sensible distance cleans without emptying the joints; a narrow jet held close will strip them. Re-sand after any serious wash. Weeds pull out easily if you get to them early.

Sealing is optional. It enriches the colour and makes spills easier to clean up, but it has to be redone every few years. On a proper base the drive lasts decades, and we can usually leave you spare blocks so any damaged one can be swapped later.

Block Paving in Hatfield: Common Questions

Are you based in Hatfield?

Yes, the yard is on Stockbreach Road in AL10. It is the town we work out of, so surveys here are straightforward to arrange and the written quote is free.

Can I come and see the blocks?

Yes. We bring samples to the survey as standard, and you are welcome to look at the ranges at the yard if you would rather see more of them together.

Is there anything to pay up front?

No. The survey and quotation are free, there is no deposit, and payment is due once the drive is finished.

Which pattern should I have?

Herringbone where the car stands, because it interlocks under turning and braking. Stretcher or basketweave suits paths and borders. We will go through your layout at the survey.

How long does it take?

The groundwork is the longest part. Laying, compacting and sanding move faster, and the drive is usable once that is done. The quote sets out the number of days.

Do I need a dropped kerb?

Only for a new or widened vehicle crossing, and that is a council application rather than something we issue. We will flag it at the survey if it looks likely.
