Block Paving in Borehamwood, explained

Most block paving that goes wrong did not go wrong at the top. It spread at an unrestrained edge, or it sank where the sub-base was never compacted properly, and the blocks themselves were never the problem. So that is where the money goes on our quotes, and it is what we look at first when somebody asks us to put a failed drive right.

The choice in front of you is bigger than it looks. Block range, colour, size, texture, laying pattern, border, and whether you want a permeable block so the drive drains through itself. We bring the ranges to the survey and lay a few options out on the ground, because a block looks different in a brochure to how it looks next to your brick in daylight.

We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you settle up when the drive is finished, swept and signed off.

We cover the WD6 postcode in Borehamwood, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey with block ranges and patterns to look at on the ground
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing payable until the job is done
  • Excavation to the depth the ground and the traffic actually call for
  • A compacted sub-base, a screeded laying course, and edge restraints haunched in concrete
  • Blocks laid to your pattern, cut in around manholes, kerbs and the threshold
  • Kiln-dried sand brushed in, the drive vibrated, a second sanding pass, and the site swept clean

Choosing block paving in Borehamwood

The difference between a tidy block drive and a scruffy one is usually in the cutting. Blocks have to be worked around manholes, kerbs, gullies and the garage threshold, and whether those cuts are made cleanly with a splitter or a saw, or bodged with whatever came to hand, is the thing your eye lands on every time you pull up.

Straight lines, tight joints and full blocks where they can be seen are not extras, they are what the job is. We set the pattern out from the fixed edge so the cuts fall where they are least obtrusive rather than across the middle of the drive.

The rest of the case for blocks is structural and practical. Herringbone interlocks where vehicles turn and brake, the surface can be lifted and relaid for repairs rather than broken out, and the ongoing requirement is keeping kiln-dried sand in the joints so they stay locked and weed-free.

What happens on site in Borehamwood

Groundwork comes first: excavation to the depth the build-up needs, spoil removed, and the sub-base compacted in layers rather than filled in one go.

Edge restraints are then set and haunched in concrete before any laying, because unrestrained paving spreads under traffic and goes loose from the edges inwards. A screeded laying course follows, and the blocks are laid to the agreed pattern working from that fixed edge so the setting out stays true and the cuts land sensibly.

Cuts around manholes, kerbs and thresholds are made with a block splitter or a saw. Then kiln-dried sand is brushed into every joint and the whole area compacted with a plate, which locks the blocks together. A second sanding goes in afterwards, as the joints always take more once compacted.

What affects the price in Borehamwood

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The block range you pick, which is the single biggest swing in most quotes
  • The laying pattern, because herringbone and the detailed patterns carry far more cutting
  • How much restraint the perimeter needs, and whether any of it is kerbed
  • The depth of sub-base the ground and the expected traffic call for
  • Cutting in around curves, manholes, gullies and the garage threshold
  • Clearing the old surface, and any drainage channel across the entrance

Looking after block paving

The joints need topping up with kiln-dried sand every couple of years. It is quick and it is what keeps the surface tight, which in turn keeps the weeds out.

Pressure washing calls for some restraint: a wide fan held well back cleans perfectly well, while a narrow jet close up will strip the joints empty. Brush fresh sand in once it has dried. Early weeds come out by hand.

Sealing is optional and repeats every few years. It is not what makes the drive last. A properly built base and restrained edges are, and with those you are looking at decades, with damaged blocks swapped individually.

Block Paving in Borehamwood: Common Questions

Do you work in Borehamwood?

Yes, WD6 is within our standard area. We work from Hatfield and both the survey and the written quote are free.

How do you handle cuts around manholes and kerbs?

With a block splitter or a saw, and the pattern set out from the fixed edge so cuts fall where they show least. Clean cuts and tight joints are a large part of how a finished drive reads.

Is there a charge for quoting?

No. The survey and quotation are free, there is no deposit, and nothing is due until the job is finished.

Which pattern works best?

Herringbone where the car stands and turns, because it interlocks against those loads. Stretcher or basketweave suits paths and borders. We go through it at the survey.

How long will the drive be unusable?

Mostly during the groundwork. Once laid, compacted and sanded it can be used. The quotation states the days to allow.

Can I see samples?

Yes, we bring them to the survey so you can judge colour and texture against the house.
