Resin Driveways in Stevenage, explained

Two quite different surfaces get sold as resin, and the word on the quotation is often the only place the difference shows. Resin bonded is stone scattered over a tacky layer. Resin bound, which is what we lay, has the stone mixed right through the material and troweled flat, and only one of the two gives you a sealed surface that drains through itself.

Worth asking whoever else is pricing your drive. The cost, though, is decided underneath. Resin is a surface layer, so what matters is the state of the base below it and how much of that has to be rebuilt.

We open it up at the survey and then put one fixed figure in writing, rather than a rate per square metre that would be wrong for most drives. Stevenage, SG1 and SG2, is part of our normal round from Hatfield. No deposit, and you settle when the drive is finished.

We cover the SG1 and SG2 postcodes in Stevenage, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free site survey, with stone samples to hold up against the house
  • One fixed price in writing, with no deposit and nothing to pay up front
  • Lifting the old surface and carting the spoil away
  • A permeable sub-base compacted in layers, and a binder course where the base needs one
  • Resin and stone mixed on site and hand troweled, with edges, thresholds and drainage detailed in
  • A full sweep up, and payment only once you have walked the finished drive with us

Choosing resin driveways in Stevenage

The thing to understand about resin before you price it is that it is a surface, not a structure. It goes on top of a build-up, and it takes the shape of whatever it is laid over. On a sound base it will sit flat for years. Over a base that is already breaking up it will crack along the same lines, because nothing in a 15mm layer of stone and resin can hold together ground that is moving underneath it.

That is why we dig a trial hole at the survey in Stevenage rather than quote off the pavement. If the base is good, the job is quick and the price reflects it. If it has gone, it comes out and gets rebuilt, and you see that cost separately instead of finding it halfway through the week.

What you get at the end is a sealed, permeable surface with the stone held right through it. Nothing loose to rake back off the lawn, no gravel migrating to the front step, and water going down through the drive rather than running off it. You pick the stone blend from samples held against your own brickwork.

What happens on site in Stevenage

The first two or three days rarely look like driveway work at all. We take the old surface up, cart the spoil away, and then build the sub-base back in compacted layers. Compacting in layers is slower than tipping it in and rolling the top, and it is the whole reason a drive is still flat in year five rather than dished where the car sits.

Over that goes a binder course of tarmac or concrete, if what we have uncovered calls for one, so the resin has something firm and even to be trowelled onto. The resin and stone go through a forced-action mixer on site, one batch at a time, and are spread and trowelled by hand while they are still workable.

Laying day depends on the forecast, not the diary. Resin will not cure on a wet surface or in a hard frost, so if the weather turns we stop and come back. We would rather tell you we are waiting than hand you a drive that went down in the wrong conditions. Most drives take foot traffic the same evening and a car a day later.

What affects the price in Stevenage

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • How much of the existing surface has to come out, and where the spoil goes
  • What we find underneath it: a sound base saves you a great deal, a failed one has to be rebuilt
  • The area, and how much of it is curves and cuts rather than straight runs
  • The stone blend you choose, because the aggregates are not all priced the same
  • Drainage, edgings, thresholds and any steps that form part of the job
  • Access, and in particular whether we can get a lorry and a mixer near the work

Looking after resin driveways

There is very little to do. Autumn is the one time it wants attention: get the leaves off with a brush or a blower before they break down, because rotting leaf litter is what feeds moss on any permeable surface.

A rinse with a hose handles the rest. If you use a pressure washer, put it on a wide fan, stand well back and keep it moving, since a narrow jet held close will damage the resin face. Go steady with de-icing salt too: a scatter during a freeze is fine, a heavy dose every winter is not kind to any surface.

Over a base that was built properly, expect 15 to 20 years. Damage stays local, which is the useful part. A spill or a cracked patch can be cut out and re-laid on its own, so you are not taking up a whole drive to deal with a square metre of it.

Resin Driveways in Stevenage: Common Questions

Do you lay resin driveways in Stevenage?

Yes. Stevenage is part of our regular round, SG1 and SG2 included. We work out of Hatfield, and both the survey and the written quotation are free.

Is there anything to pay for the survey?

No. The visit and the written quote cost nothing and commit you to nothing. There is no deposit either, and no money changes hands until the drive is finished.

How quickly could you get started?

It depends what is already booked in and what the weather is doing, since resin cannot be laid wet or frozen. You will get an honest window with the quotation rather than a date we suspect will move.

Will I need planning permission?

Usually not. A permeable front-garden surface normally falls inside permitted development, and resin bound is permeable. Properties differ, so check with the council if yours is listed or sits in a conservation area.

How many days will the drive be unusable?

The groundwork is what takes the time, not the resin. Once the base is right the surface goes down fast and you are parking on it shortly after. We confirm the number of days when we quote.

What if it rains partway through the job?

Groundwork carries on in most weather. The resin does not, because it will not cure damp or cold. If the forecast turns we come back and finish it properly rather than lay it to hit a date.

What does a resin drive cost?

It depends almost entirely on the base underneath and how much of it survives. We open it up at the free survey, then give you one fixed figure in writing covering the lot, with the build-up and the stone blend written down.

How long should it last?

On a properly built base, 15 to 20 years. Most of that lifespan is decided before any resin appears, by the sub-base and the binder course under it.

Does water drain through it?

Resin bound is permeable, so rain passes through the surface into the ground beneath instead of sheeting off towards the road. It only works if the base below can take the water, which is part of what the survey checks.

Is it slippery underfoot?

Not normally. The stone runs through the full depth, so what you walk on is aggregate, and water drains away rather than sitting on top. Ice and wet leaves need the same care as on any surface.
