Gravel Driveways in Stevenage, explained

Gravel is the least expensive surface we lay and the quickest to finish. It is also the one most often done badly, because tipping stone onto bare ground takes an afternoon and looks perfectly good for about a season. Nearly all of what you are paying us for disappears from view the moment the stone goes down: the membrane, the compacted base and the edge detail.

The decision that moves the figure most is loose stone against stabilised. Loose is traditional, cheapest and simple to add to later. A grid costs more up front and changes how the drive behaves under a wheel and underfoot for the rest of its life.

Where it is a close call we price both, so you are choosing between two numbers rather than taking our word for which suits you. We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you pay when the job is finished.

We cover the SG1 and SG2 postcodes in Stevenage, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey, with stone types, sizes and colours to look at
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing to pay up front
  • Excavation to depth, with the spoil cleared away
  • A geotextile membrane and a compacted sub-base under the whole area
  • Edgings or restraints at every boundary so the stone is contained
  • The stone you picked, laid at the depth it actually wants, and the site left clean

Choosing gravel driveways in Stevenage

Loose gravel has two well-known faults: it migrates, and it rucks up into ruts where the wheels run. A cellular grid fixes both. The grid is laid over the prepared base and filled with stone, so each cell holds its own gravel at an even depth and nothing can gather into humps and hollows.

The look barely changes. From standing height you see stone, not plastic, because the grid sits below the surface once filled. What changes is how the drive behaves: it stays flat where the car turns, it is far easier to walk and wheel across, and it needs almost none of the raking a loose drive asks for.

Loose gravel is still the cheapest way to cover a lot of ground, and it drains as well as anything you can lay. If budget is the deciding factor in Stevenage it remains a sensible choice, and it is the easiest surface of all to alter later. We will price both so you can see what the grid is worth to you.

What happens on site in Stevenage

We excavate to the depth required and lay a geotextile membrane before anything else goes down. That membrane keeps the stone separate from the subsoil, which is what stops gravel slowly sinking away into soft ground, and it blocks weeds coming up from below.

A sub-base goes on top of the membrane and is compacted. Where a grid is being used, the cellular panels are laid over that compacted base and filled with stone, which holds the depth even across the whole drive and prevents ruts forming along the wheel tracks.

Edgings are installed along every boundary to contain the stone, and the gravel is spread and raked to an even depth. We are deliberate about not overfilling. Too deep a bed of loose stone is hard work for cars and harder still for anyone on foot, and it is one of the commonest mistakes on a gravel drive.

What affects the price in Stevenage

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The area, and the depth of stone the drive needs to look full and drive well
  • The stone you choose, since decorative blends cost more than a plain angular chipping
  • How much edging or restraint the perimeter needs, and what it is made of
  • Loose stone or a cellular grid, which is the biggest single choice in the quote
  • Clearing the existing surface and getting the spoil away
  • Any falls, drainage or steps the ground forces on the layout

Looking after gravel driveways

A gridded drive asks very little. The stone is held at depth in its cells, so the annual raking that a loose drive needs largely disappears, which is much of the reason people pay for the grid in the first place.

On a loose drive, expect to rake once or twice a year, pulling the high spots back into the hollows, mostly where the car turns in. Some stone leaves over time on tyres and shoes, so an occasional top-up with the same blend brings it back.

The membrane deals with weeds from below. Wind-blown seed can still root in the surface stone, so pulling them as they appear or treating the drive occasionally keeps it clean.

Gravel Driveways in Stevenage: Common Questions

Do you lay gravel drives in Stevenage?

Yes, SG1 and SG2 are both in our normal area. We work from Hatfield and the survey and written quotation are free.

What is a gravel grid?

Cellular panels laid over the compacted base and filled with stone. Each cell holds its gravel at an even depth, so the surface stays flat, does not rut along the wheel tracks and needs very little raking.

Will I see the grid?

Not from standing height. Once filled, the grid sits below the surface of the stone and what you see is gravel.

Is the survey free?

Yes, along with the quote. No deposit is taken and nothing is payable until the drive is finished.

Does a grid cost much more?

It adds to the price, and we quote loose and gridded side by side so you can judge whether the difference is worth it for your drive.

Will the stone end up on the pavement?

Far less with edgings along every boundary, and less again with a grid. Loose gravel with no containment will always travel.
