Patios & Paving in Hatfield, explained

A patio quote is really a quote for three things: the ground under it, the levels across it, and the slab on top. Most people are only thinking about the third one, and most patios that fail do so because of the first two. So the survey is spent on the base, the falls away from the house, and where the water is going to end up once there is a solid surface where soil used to be.

Two things get fixed before a slab is laid and they are not up for discussion, because the house is what pays if they are wrong. We set them at the survey and they shape the design rather than the other way round. Everything after that is yours: porcelain, natural stone, concrete or block, the size and the shape, where the steps go, and whether the levels want a retaining or sleeper wall to make sense of them.

We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal work. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you pay when the patio is finished and you have seen it.

We cover the AL10 postcode in Hatfield, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free design and survey visit, with materials to look at in daylight
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing payable up front
  • Excavation, a compacted sub-base, and the falls set away from the house
  • Slabs laid on a full mortar bed, never on dabs, and cut on a wet saw
  • Jointing, clean edges, and matching paths, steps or retaining walls where the design needs them
  • The garden cleared and swept, and payment once you are happy with it

Choosing patios & paving in Hatfield

The most useful question at the start is not which slab but what the space is for. A dining patio needs to be level, close enough to the door to carry plates, and big enough that chairs can push back without a leg dropping off the edge. People consistently underestimate that last measurement.

A sun-trap is a different brief entirely. It does not need to touch the house or be square to it, and it should sit wherever the sun actually falls in the late afternoon, which is often not where you would draw it on a plan.

We are based in Hatfield, on Stockbreach Road, so getting out to look at the garden is straightforward and we can bring samples to see outdoors against your own house. Steps and level changes are worth designing in from the start rather than adding at the end, which is what makes a patio feel designed rather than assembled.

What happens on site in Hatfield

Excavation and a compacted sub-base come first, then the falls are set so the patio sheds water away from the house and finishes at least two courses below the damp proof course. Those are settled before any laying and are not adjustable later.

Each slab is laid on a full mortar bed rather than on dabs, so it is supported across its full underside and no voids are left beneath for water to gather in. All cutting is done with a wet saw for clean, consistent edges.

Joints are brushed in or slurried according to material and width. The edges get proper attention too, with a channel drain or a mowing edge where the paving meets the house, a path or the lawn, rather than a ragged junction.

What affects the price in Hatfield

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The size of the patio, plus any paths and steps that go with it
  • The paving you choose, which is the widest swing in any patio quote
  • Changes in level, and whether they need steps or a retaining wall to work
  • Ground conditions, and where the water is going once the surface is solid
  • Access to the rear garden, since everything in and all the spoil out may have to go by barrow
  • The jointing finish, and any edging, lighting or drainage channel built in

Looking after patios & paving

Brush and wash the surface once or twice a year, keeping joints and any drainage channel clear. Drainage left to block is behind most of the patio problems we get asked to look at.

Porcelain needs almost no sealing. Sandstone and limestone are more porous and do better with a sealer, redone every few years, to slow staining from food, drink and fallen leaves. Clean up spills promptly on anything.

A little green growth in the shade is normal. A biocide handles it slowly and without scrubbing. Any slab that gets damaged can be lifted out and replaced without touching its neighbours.

Patios & Paving in Hatfield: Common Questions

Are you based in Hatfield?

Yes, on Stockbreach Road in AL10. It is the town we work from, so a design visit is easy to arrange and both it and the written quote are free.

How big should a dining patio be?

Bigger than most people first think. Chairs need room to push back from the table without a leg going off the edge, and that is the measurement usually underestimated.

Should the patio be against the house?

Not necessarily. A dining area usually benefits from being close to the door, but a sun-trap is better placed wherever the sun actually reaches, which need not be square to the building.

Can I see samples?

Yes, we bring them to the design visit so you can see them outdoors against your own brick and in daylight.

Is there a charge for the visit?

No, and none for the quotation. There is no deposit and nothing to pay until the work is done.

Should steps be part of the design?

Yes, designed in from the start rather than added at the end. That is much of what makes a finished patio feel coherent.
