Gravel Driveways in Hatfield, explained

Gravel is the least expensive surface we lay and the quickest to finish. It is also the one most often done badly, because tipping stone onto bare ground takes an afternoon and looks perfectly good for about a season. Nearly all of what you are paying us for disappears from view the moment the stone goes down: the membrane, the compacted base and the edge detail.

The decision that moves the figure most is loose stone against stabilised. Loose is traditional, cheapest and simple to add to later. A grid costs more up front and changes how the drive behaves under a wheel and underfoot for the rest of its life.

Where it is a close call we price both, so you are choosing between two numbers rather than taking our word for which suits you. We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you pay when the job is finished.

We cover the AL10 postcode in Hatfield, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey, with stone types, sizes and colours to look at
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing to pay up front
  • Excavation to depth, with the spoil cleared away
  • A geotextile membrane and a compacted sub-base under the whole area
  • Edgings or restraints at every boundary so the stone is contained
  • The stone you picked, laid at the depth it actually wants, and the site left clean

Choosing gravel driveways in Hatfield

Gravel covers more ground per pound than any other driveway surface, which is why it keeps coming up whenever the area is large. A long approach, a wide frontage or a parking area that would run to a serious number in blocks or resin stays affordable in stone.

Our yard is in Hatfield, on Stockbreach Road, so we can bring blends for you to look at in daylight rather than choosing from a photograph. Stone colour behaves much like block colour: what looks distinct on a screen can read very similarly once it is down and wet.

The things to weigh are containment and comfort. Loose stone travels without proper edgings and is hard work for a pram or a wheelchair. A grid-stabilised or bonded finish solves both and keeps the appearance, at a price we will quote alongside loose stone.

What happens on site in Hatfield

The area is excavated to the depth required and a geotextile membrane is laid. That membrane keeps the gravel from working down into the subsoil, which is how stone quietly disappears on an unmembraned drive, and it stops weeds coming up from below.

A sub-base is laid over it and compacted. If a cellular grid is part of the specification, it goes over that base and is filled with stone so the depth stays even and the wheel tracks do not rut.

Edgings are fitted along every boundary to hold the stone, then the gravel is spread and raked to an even depth. We are careful not to lay it too deep, because a thick bed of loose stone is difficult for cars and unpleasant to walk on, and it is the most common fault we are asked to put right.

What affects the price in Hatfield

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The area, and the depth of stone the drive needs to look full and drive well
  • The stone you choose, since decorative blends cost more than a plain angular chipping
  • How much edging or restraint the perimeter needs, and what it is made of
  • Loose stone or a cellular grid, which is the biggest single choice in the quote
  • Clearing the existing surface and getting the spoil away
  • Any falls, drainage or steps the ground forces on the layout

Looking after gravel driveways

A loose drive wants raking once or twice a year, mostly where the car turns, pulling the high spots back into the hollows. A gridded drive needs very little of this.

Stone leaves gradually on tyres and shoes. Topping up occasionally with the same blend is expected and brings the drive back to looking new.

The membrane keeps weeds from growing up through the drive. Wind-blown seed can still germinate in the top layer of stone, so deal with them early or treat the surface from time to time.

Gravel Driveways in Hatfield: Common Questions

Are you based in Hatfield?

Yes, the yard is on Stockbreach Road in AL10, so this is the town we work from. The survey and written quote are free.

Can I see the stone before deciding?

Yes. We bring blends to the survey, and you are welcome to look at them at the yard, because stone colour reads quite differently in daylight than in a photograph.

Is gravel the cheapest option?

Per square metre, generally yes, which is why it suits larger areas. Adding a grid or a bonded finish raises the cost but changes how the drive behaves.

Is there a deposit?

No deposit, and nothing to pay until the drive is finished.

How deep will the gravel be?

To an even, sensible depth. Over-deep loose stone is harder to drive and walk on, and it moves more, so more is not better.

Can it be changed later?

Yes. Gravel is the easiest surface to alter, extend or convert, because there is nothing to break out first.
