Gravel Driveways in Letchworth Garden City, explained

Gravel is the least expensive surface we lay and the quickest to finish. It is also the one most often done badly, because tipping stone onto bare ground takes an afternoon and looks perfectly good for about a season. Nearly all of what you are paying us for disappears from view the moment the stone goes down: the membrane, the compacted base and the edge detail.

The decision that moves the figure most is loose stone against stabilised. Loose is traditional, cheapest and simple to add to later. A grid costs more up front and changes how the drive behaves under a wheel and underfoot for the rest of its life.

Where it is a close call we price both, so you are choosing between two numbers rather than taking our word for which suits you. We are based in Hatfield and this area is part of our normal round. The survey and the written price are free, there is no deposit, and you pay when the job is finished.

We cover the SG6 postcode in Letchworth Garden City, and the rest of Hertfordshire.

What your quote covers

  • A free survey, with stone types, sizes and colours to look at
  • One fixed price in writing, no deposit, nothing to pay up front
  • Excavation to depth, with the spoil cleared away
  • A geotextile membrane and a compacted sub-base under the whole area
  • Edgings or restraints at every boundary so the stone is contained
  • The stone you picked, laid at the depth it actually wants, and the site left clean

Choosing gravel driveways in Letchworth Garden City

Gravel is the least committal driveway surface there is. Adding to it, reshaping it, widening a turning area or converting it to something else later involves no breaking out, no spoil and no demolition. You are working with loose material over a base rather than a bonded surface.

That matters if the plans for the house are not settled. An extension, a new garage, a different parking layout or simply changing your mind are all much cheaper to accommodate on gravel than on anything laid solid.

The rest of the case is familiar: it covers the most ground for the money, it drains as well as anything you can lay, and you can hear someone walking on it. Against that, loose stone travels without proper edging and is hard going for a pram or a wheelchair, both of which a grid or bonded finish addresses.

What happens on site in Letchworth Garden City

We excavate to the required depth and lay a geotextile membrane, which separates the stone from the subsoil so the gravel cannot work its way down into soft ground, and stops weeds growing up from beneath.

A sub-base is laid over the membrane and compacted. Where a cellular grid is specified, it is placed over that base and filled with stone, keeping the gravel at an even depth and preventing ruts along the wheel tracks.

Edgings go in along each boundary to contain the stone, and the gravel is spread and raked to an even depth. We keep that depth sensible rather than generous, since over-deep loose stone is hard for cars and harder for people on foot.

What affects the price in Letchworth Garden City

We do not publish a rate per square metre, because the number would be wrong for most properties. The survey is free and the price you get afterwards is fixed and in writing. These are the things that move it:

  • The area, and the depth of stone the drive needs to look full and drive well
  • The stone you choose, since decorative blends cost more than a plain angular chipping
  • How much edging or restraint the perimeter needs, and what it is made of
  • Loose stone or a cellular grid, which is the biggest single choice in the quote
  • Clearing the existing surface and getting the spoil away
  • Any falls, drainage or steps the ground forces on the layout

Looking after gravel driveways

Expect to rake a loose drive once or twice a year, mainly around where the car turns, pulling high spots back into the hollows. A gridded drive needs very little of this.

Over time a little stone goes with tyres and shoes, so an occasional top-up of the same blend brings the drive back up to depth and appearance.

Weeds from below are stopped by the membrane, while wind-blown seed can root in the surface layer. Pull them early or treat the drive occasionally and it stays clean.

Gravel Driveways in Letchworth Garden City: Common Questions

Do you cover Letchworth Garden City?

Yes, SG6 is in our area. We are based in Hatfield and the survey and written quote are free.

Can a gravel drive be extended later?

Easily. Gravel is loose material over a base, so adding to it or reshaping it does not involve breaking anything out.

Can I convert it to another surface later?

Yes, and more cheaply than converting from a solid surface, because there is nothing to demolish and no spoil to remove beyond the stone itself.

Is the survey free?

Yes, and so is the quotation. No deposit is taken and nothing is due until the drive is finished.

How much maintenance is there?

Raking once or twice a year on a loose drive, the odd top-up of stone, and pulling surface weeds. A grid reduces the raking to almost nothing.

Does gravel drain well?

As well as anything you can lay. Water passes straight down between the stones into the base below.
